Arabic-German literary evening with Ramy Al-Asheq
Thursday, February 22, 2018, 7 pm | Gallery Berlin-Baku
At 6.30 pm free guided tour through the exhibition "Where ART you from?"
Donations are welcome for admission
The Syrian-Palestinian poet and writer Ramy Al-Asheq has published two volumes of poetry, "Walking on Dreams" (2014) and "In My Travel Outfit" (2017), and one volume of prose, “Since I didn’t die” (2016). Apart from his literary writing, he works as a journalist and is currently editor in chief of the Arabic-German culture magazine FANN.
On this evening, Al-Asheq will read from his texts in Arabic, in which his own experiences of captivity, war and escape are omnipresent: In 2011, he was arrested after participating in peaceful protests against the Syrian regime. However, he was released later on and managed to escape to Jordan. Al-Asheq came to Germany with a fellowship for writers from Heinrich-Böll-Haus in Langenbroich.
Listeners without any knowledge of the Arabic language will immediately be affected sensually by Al-Asheq's poetic and emotional language – the words linger in their shape before being translated.
Journalist and translator Lilian Pithan will read the German translation.
Ramy Al-Asheq, born in Al Sharjah (UAE) and raised in the Yarmuk Camp for Palestinian Refugees in Damascus, lives in Berlin.
